Late last year I helped my aunty and uncle host a fundraiser for a wonderful charity called ANZGOG where we raised roughly $20,000!! That in itself is such a huge achievement. I'm incredibly proud to have been apart of such an amazing effort! We hosted an open garden and market day around the Brucedale area of Wagga Wagga.
The charity ANZGOG is the wonderful organisation that we raised funds for with their campaign 'WOMENcan'. This is the campaign they use for community based fundraisers. ANZGOG (Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group) is an organisation which strives to improve the outcomes and quality of life for women who have gynaecological cancers through research programs and clinical trials.
The survival rate of cancers have improved by 19% over the past 20 years which is a great percentage! But gynaecological cancer survival rates have only improved by 7%.
In 2018 over 6257 women were diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer which makes that just over 16 women diagnosed per day! This is why funds for this great cause are needed more than ever.
On the day of our fundraiser in true 'Bruce family' tradition we had speeches to recognise the amazing effort and donations we received. During the speeches my Aunty Deb spoke about her own story and there was a certain statement she made that should be recognised. 'If I have made just 50 women aware of gynaecological cancer and to get themselves checked, I feel I have achieved something today'. As strong as she is for herself, seeing how incredibly strong and compassionate she is towards everyone else around her while she is suffering her own battle is truely commendable. She is the most realistic yet optimistic person I know and to call her my aunty I am so so proud!
Cancer already seems like such a big scary word. When it happens to you or someone you love it becomes a reality and the reality isn't pretty, its not nice, it doesn't go away and its something that's always on your mind. But one thing it does, is show the strength of the people it hits.
